Below is a calendar of key things you can be doing in your garden during the month of January.

Approximate Timing & January Gardening Activities:

Early January

  • Happy New Year! We are closed (Jan. 1) today but will be open tomorrow!
  • Have you already harvested your lettuce and broccoli? There's still time to plant another crop.
  • It's rose pruning time! Clean up your roses to get ready for spring blooms!

Mid-January

  • Check for incoming early tomato plant starts at your local SummerWinds Nursery.
  • It's soil testing time! Begin to amend your soil for spring planting.

Late January

  • Has the temperature started to warm? If so, check for new herb and vegetable plant starts at your local SummerWinds.
  • It's time to prune your deciduous fruit trees.
  • GORGEOUS COLOR IS HERE! Fill your raised and in-ground garden beds, and planters with beautiful spring color!

January Planting Calendar

Plant the following edibles from 1/1 - 1/14:

  • Seeds: Beets, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chard, collard greens, endive, head and leaf lettuces, leek, mustard, green onions, peas, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, spinach, and turnips
  • Transplants: Asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, chard, kohlrabi, head and leaf lettuces, leek, mustard, green onions, peas, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, spinach, and turnips
  • Sets: Bulb onions

Plant the following edibles from 1/15 - 1/31:

  • Seeds: Beets, bok choy, carrots, chard, collard greens, endive, head and leaf lettuces, leek, mustard, green onions, peas, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, spinach, and turnips
  • Transplants: Globe and Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, chard, kohlrabi, and head and leaf lettuces
  • Sets: Bulb onions
