Beneficial insects such as pollinators like bees, and butterflies as well as predator insects like ladybugs help to pollinate your garden for a bigger harvest and help rid of harmful insects such as aphids on vegetables and flowers.
Earthworms play an important role in the health of our soil both in gardens and lawns. They improve soil conditions by changing soil texture and by adding nutrients to the soil as they go about their day. Earthworms eat a large amount of organic materials daily, such as decaying plants, grasses and fallen leaves. As they grind up these organic materials they leave behind small deposits called castings. Castings are rich in elements that are critical for plant growth. In addition, their burrowing through the soil helps to aerate--allowing for better water penetration and healthier root growth. They also neutralize soil's acidity and stimulate the activity of soil microbes.
Worm Castings are often used by gardeners as an amendment to their soil, similar to that of using compost.
These usually microscopic colorless roundworms live in soil and are non-segmented and elongated in shape. Also known as entomopathogenic nematodes, they can be used to control soil borne insect pests, such as caterpillars, cutworms, crown boreres, grubs, corn rootworms, crane flies, thrips, fungus gnats and beetles.
Note: they do not control pests found in leaf canopies.
Beneficial nematodes are an environmentally friendly solution and have no harmful effects on earthworms, plants, animals or humans.
