Whether you're looking to enjoy a limited turf area or a larger traditional lawn, our ryegrass seed packages can help you do just that—and they're a great alternative to laying new sod or opting for artificial turf.

Concerned about water usage? We can help you sensibly water your landscape and lawn so that your grass has the water it needs without wasting this precious resource. Did you know, once your winter lawn is established, it requires about half as much water as a summer lawn?

How to Plant a Great Winter Lawn

  1. You'll know it’s time to plant your winter ryegrass lawn once our night-time temperatures drop to 65° Fahrenheit—consistently, for about a week.
  2. Begin by mowing your lawn as low as possible. Remove grass cuttings (thatch) using a de-thatching rake or a power rake machine.
  3. Broadcast Ryegrass Seed at the rate of 1 to 1.5 lb. per 100 sq. ft. For lush green lawns use 1.5 lb. per 100 sq. ft., 15 lb. per 1,000 sq. ft.
  4. Broadcast Ferti-lome New Lawn Starter Fertilizer according to directions.
  5. Lightly cover the seed with SummerWinds Soil Conditioner & Seed Cover (no deeper than 1/4 of an inch). This will help to keep the seeds moist between watering and provide cover from opportunistic birds.
  6. Water - little water resources are required!  Use enough water to moisten the top 1-inch of soil based on your system’s output.  Avoid puddling as seed will float to the outer edge of the puddle and germinate there. Depending on your system’s output, you may only need to water for approximately 2 minutes per day (to moisten the top 1-inch of soil), 5 times per day—for a total of 10 minutes of watering daily.  Seed must stay moist to germinate.  The soil conditioner and seed cover you applied in step 4, above, will also act as a mulch and help retain moisture between watering.

Lush Winter Lawn with Grasses

Germination will occur in 7 to 10 days. As the ‘green haze’ of new grass appears decrease watering frequency and begin watering longer. It will take approximately 3 weeks to establish your lawn.  Established lawns will need watering twice a week. Daily watering is not necessary on a lawn this is being mowed weekly.

Did you know, an established ryegrass winter lawn requires about half as much water to maintain as your summer lawn? Learn more about how to water your lawn and landscape sensibly; check out the Landscape Watering by the Numbers guide for the Arizona Desert, available from Water – Use It Wisely.

7. After the second mowing, fertilize your lawn with Ferti-lome New Lawn Starter Fertilizer or Ferti-lome Green Maker premium lawn food (available at your local SummerWinds), or with E.B. Stone Organics Natural & Organic Lawn Food.  To keep your winter at its best, fertilize your lawn according to product recommendations.
